SONGWRITER DIARIES Vol I. is a 50 part YouTube series sharing 10+ years of unreleased music by Liverpool songwriter Katie Nicholas, revealing the stories and personal journey behind her earliest music. With 7 distinct themes, this collection is one of metamorphosis, exploring the many eras Katie has moved through as a young writer who struggled to get her work out into the world. Beginning in 2007 with her first song, the series journeys through a decade of songs between 2010 and 2020, with the majority of tracks written between the ages of 18 and 21 (30 songs). In a bold effort to set free all that has struggled to see the light of day, here she attempts to catch up with her extensive back catalogue, and is no longer feeling “stuck in her cocoon”… Most recently in 2023, just as Katie was ready to release music after years of silence, her mother suddenly passed away, as the release of her “Feather” EP was scheduled. The distributor (now gone bust) also accidentally released the EP ahead of schedule and flattened the chances of any placement or reach. Determined to manage and navigate her grief through music and art, Katie opened a fabric shop honouring her mother’s creative legacy in Liverpool’s Red Brick Market. Katie then went on to sell out her first headline show independently at the Liverpool philharmonic music room accompanied by a string quartet. Despite years of silence, people had stuck by and remembered songs she’s struggled for years to set free… 10 years before, in 2013 she won the Michael Molloy youth music Liverpool music award sponsored by the mayor of Liverpool. Her future was bright after the viral uptake of her homemade valentines video of “Chemistry” at 17. She moved to London at 18 as a designer and released her debut album “Dizzy” at 19 outside of the 9to5. After plenty of organic interest and no.1 / no.3 UK and Ire country chart placements, significant festival slots, Katie’s bright future came to a stand still after a string of setbacks and ever since she has struggled to get the songs out… creating a large backlog that became more and more difficult to manage alone.
